The former England international, who had a two-year stint as a player at DC United following his second spell with Everton, re-joined the club in July 2022 as their manager with the goal of guiding them to the playoffs. However, he has decided to resign after a little over a year in charge, as that objective remained unattained.

Rooney clarified his decision to leave DC United after the conclusion of the 2023 MLS season, which culminated with a match against New York City FC, stating, “The timing feels right [to depart DC United]. I’ve given my all to help this club reach the playoffs, but it’s time for a change.”
