Manchester United have reportedly received a boost in their pursuit of Palmeiras midfielder Richard Rios.

The 24-year-old was linked with a move to United over the summer, but the club focused on securing Manuel Ugarte from Paris Saint-Germain instead. However, midfield remains a concern for the Red Devils, with Christian Eriksen’s contract set to expire next year and Casemiro expected to leave at the end of the 2024-25 season.

If the opportunity arises, United could make a move for a new midfielder in the January transfer window, with Rios believed to be one of the top targets. According to CaughtOffside, Palmeiras have signaled they are willing to sell Rios for €20m (£16.7m) this winter.

The Colombian international joined Palmeiras from Guarani in 2023 and has made 94 appearances for the club, scoring five goals and providing four assists. Despite recently signing a contract extension until December 2028, Palmeiras would reportedly consider a significant offer. Fulham, Everton, Wolverhampton Wanderers, and AC Milan are also monitoring the midfielder, with several clubs sending scouts to watch his performances.

Rios impressed for Colombia during the Copa America, playing a key role in their run to the final, and he was seen as a serious alternative to Ugarte for United over the summer.

United’s interest in the January transfer market remains uncertain, particularly with Erik ten Hag’s future under discussion amid the club’s poor start to the season. However, should things turn around, the squad could be bolstered in early 2025. Though January can be a challenging window, United have previously made key signings, including Patrice Evra, Nemanja Vidic, and Bruno Fernandes, and Rios could prove to be a valuable addition. A mid-season move could also pave the way for Casemiro’s departure.
