Manchester United are continuing their search for a backup left-back who can also cover the left side of central defense, and have reportedly considered signing Marcos Alonso, according to The Athletic.

The 33-year-old is available on a free transfer after leaving Barcelona at the end of the 2023-24 season and remains a potential option for United, who have shown ongoing interest in him over recent months.

With Luke Shaw prone to injuries and having missed pre-season due to an extended break after the European Championship, and Tyrell Malacia still recovering from a season-long injury, United are keen to bolster their defensive options. In a recent match against Manchester City, manager Erik ten Hag deployed Lisandro Martinez at left-back due to defensive issues. While Martinez performed well, he was more effective when shifted back to his usual central position in the second half.

Alonso, primarily a left-back, has also shown his capability as a central defender, earning praise from former Barcelona manager Xavi. “His performances have been really good. He’s adapted very well to the centre-back position,” Xavi said after a game against Real Madrid last year. “He’s winning aerial duels, covers his space well, and is quick for a player of his stature. He helps us in the build-up. I am very happy to have Marcos on the team; he’s been a spectacular signing.”

Alonso also brings extensive Premier League experience, having spent nine years in English football with Bolton Wanderers, Sunderland, and Chelsea. Over 179 Premier League appearances, he scored 26 goals and provided 17 assists, winning the title in the 2016-17 season and earning a spot in the PFA Team of the Year the following year.

Considering his quality and availability on a free transfer, Alonso would be a valuable addition to Manchester United’s squad.
