Manchester United CEO Omar Berrada has outlined ambitious goals for new head coach Ruben Amorim, tasking him with restoring the club to dominance in both domestic and European football.
The Portuguese manager began his tenure on Sunday, overseeing a 1-1 draw against Ipswich Town in his first match. Marcus Rashford opened the scoring in the second minute, but Ipswich equalized before halftime, leaving the Red Devils still languishing in mid-table in both the Premier League and Europa League. Amorim’s first game at Old Trafford comes on Thursday when United host Bodo/Glimt in the Europa League.
Speaking during the unveiling of United’s latest financial results, Berrada expressed confidence in Amorim’s appointment and outlined his vision for the club.

“The season is now well underway for both our men’s and women’s teams, and we are keen to ensure both are as competitive as possible,” Berrada said. “We are delighted to have appointed Ruben Amorim as head coach of our men’s team and remain committed to returning Manchester United to the top of domestic and European football.”
The financial report revealed a £6.9m operating loss for the first quarter of the 2024/25 season, largely due to the absence of Champions League football and the costs associated with a significant redundancy program. However, the club expects these restructuring efforts to save £40m-£45m and improve financial results by 2025 and 2026.
Berrada highlighted several key projects and partnerships contributing to United’s long-term vision.
“Our cost and headcount reductions remain on track, and we’re pleased to see further commercial progress, including welcoming new partner Heineken through their Tiger brand,” he noted. “The renovation of the Carrington Training Centre is progressing well, and the Old Trafford Regeneration Task Force continues its work. Once recommendations are delivered, we’ll take time to evaluate all options for the upcoming year.”
Amorim’s tenure begins amidst financial restructuring and strategic planning, with the weight of United’s rich history and lofty expectations resting firmly on his shoulders.
