According to the Nigeria Police’s Abia State Command, a guy is in their sights for allegedly faking his kidnapping and extorting his family for a ransom of N3 million.

“On November 13, 2023, reports got to the police by family members that One John (male) of Amachara Umuahia was allegedly kidnapped by unknown assailants as he went to withdraw money along Bank Road in Umuahia,” the command said in a statement signed by ASP Maureen Chinaka, the Police Public Relations Officer for the command.

As per the PPRO, “The Abia State Police acted promptly upon receiving the report.” The police used surveillance information to link the alleged kidnapping to Umuahia.

When the police arrived at the designated spot, they found Mr. John at Wisdom Guest House. Upon examination, there was no indication of any outside intervention in the purported abduction.

In an attempt to raise money to pay off his significant debts, Chinaka stated, “Mr. John confessed to planning his kidnapping and demanding a ransom of 3 million naira, which after negotiation, reduced to 2 million naira from his family.” A covert probe is underway on the matter.

This notice urges the general people to refrain from committing such crimes. She issued a warning, saying, “Perpetrators face the full force of the law, including a felony charge and a potential ten years imprisonment.”
