Liverpool’s young talent, Fabio Carvalho, has communicated to his parent club his desire to terminate his season-long loan at RB Leipzig, as reported by 90min.
Having initially joined Liverpool as a teenager in 2022 following a standout season during Fulham’s Championship promotion campaign, Carvalho made 21 appearances for the Reds across all competitions. Seeking more regular playing time, the 21-year-old attacker moved to Germany for the current season.
However, Carvalho’s expectations for significant opportunities with Leipzig have not materialized. As the Bundesliga approaches its winter break, Carvalho has only started once in the league and has not featured at all in the Champions League, accumulating just 39 Bundesliga minutes since the beginning of October.

Liverpool, as per 90min, intends to recall Carvalho to Anfield next month rather than see him continue in a peripheral role at Leipzig. Upon his return from Germany, Carvalho is likely to undergo training with Liverpool for a few weeks. During this period, and with the January transfer window still open, the club will assess whether it’s best to retain him for the remainder of the season or seek a new loan until the summer.
It’s worth noting that Carvalho’s decision to go on loan in August was driven by his personal desire rather than Liverpool’s preference. While the club preferred him to stay for the season, the Portugal Under-21 international pushed for the opportunity and was granted his wish. The unsuccessful stint has left Liverpool staff dissatisfied with the situation.
Carvalho, born in Portugal and raised in and around Lisbon until the age of 11, had initially been in the youth ranks of Benfica before his family relocated to London. Eligible to represent both England and Portugal at international levels, Carvalho, who joined Portugal’s U21 side in 2022, remains uncapped at the senior level and was named in Portugal’s preliminary World Cup squad last year.
