Jones dated Shawn Powell while she was an adolescent. At the Brooklyn roller skating rink Empire, the two met. After dating Powell for a few months, Powell was arrested for robbery and given an eight and a half-year prison term. Jones continued to see Powell frequently, and the two remained in touch by writing letters to one another. While he was behind bars, the couple became engaged. Jones met Christopher Wallace around this time (The Notorious B.I.G.). Powell and Jones subsequently called off their engagement as Jones concentrated on launching her rap career.
