Jones, the second child of former U.S. Marine Linwood Jones, was born in Brooklyn’s Bedford-Stuyvesant borough of New York City. Christopher is her older brother. Jones dated Shawn Powell while she was an adolescent. At the Brooklyn roller skating rink Empire, the two met. After dating Powell for a few months, Powell was arrested for robbery and given an eight and a half-year prison term. Jones continued to see Powell frequently, and the two remained in touch by writing letters to one another. While he was behind bars, the couple became engaged. Jones met Christopher Wallace around this time (The Notorious B.I.G.). Powell and Jones subsequently called off their engagement as Jones concentrated on launching her rap career. While working on her debut album in 1996, Jones fell pregnant with Wallace’s child.

Lil’ Kim received a one-year prison term, thirty days of home detention following her release from custody, and three years of probation in July 2005. She completed her whole time at the Federal Detention Center, Philadelphia in Philadelphia’s Center City. On July 3, 2006, she was freed after serving almost a year.
