Mulkey has an impressive career as a player, having won a Pan-American gold medal in 1983 and an Olympic gold medal in 1984. Kim Mulkey made history as one of the first female basketball players in the United States to play organized basketball with boys. She dominated on the court during her time at Nesom Junior High School in Tickfaw, Louisiana, and went on to lead her team at Hammond High School to four consecutive state championships. As valedictorian, she maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA and continued her academic success at Louisiana Tech University, where she was later inducted into the College Sports Information Directors of America Academic Hall of Fame.
Standing at 5 ft 4 in (1.63 m), Mulkey proved to be a force on the court as an All-American point guard at Louisiana Tech University. She helped lead her team to two national championships, winning the AIAW title in 1981 and the inaugural NCAA title in 1982. Her skills on the court earned her the first-ever Frances Pomeroy Naismith Award for women’s college basketball in 1984, which is given to the top senior player under 5’6″ (1.68 m) (later raised to 5’8″/1.73 m).
After graduating, Mulkey became an assistant coach at Louisiana Tech in 1985, eventually becoming the associate head coach in 1996. During her 15-year tenure under Leon Barmore, the Lady Techsters achieved an impressive 430-68 record and advanced to seven Final Fours, ultimately winning the NCAA Championship in 1988.
Mulkey also represented the United States on the international stage. In 1983, she was a member of the US team at the Pan American Games in Caracas, Venezuela, where they won the gold medal. The same year, she played for the US team in the World Championships in Sao Paulo, Brazil, where they earned the silver medal after losing to the Soviet Union in the final.
In 1984, Mulkey continued her success with the US National team, playing in the William Jones Cup competition in Taipei, Taiwan, where they won every game by an average of almost 50 points. She went on to compete in the 1984 Olympics, helping the US team to win the gold medal by averaging 5.3 points per game.
