Kai Havertz has disclosed that he focused on improving the defensive aspect of his game after making the move from Chelsea to Arsenal. Despite initial criticism for struggling in a new midfield role, the £60 million summer signing has played a significant role in some of Arsenal’s notable victories, showcasing his movement in the recent 3-1 win against Liverpool.
Predominantly occupying a deeper position alongside Martin Odegaard and Declan Rice, Havertz acknowledged the time it took to adapt to the responsibilities of his new role. He explained, “Before, I used to focus a lot just on the offense, but defense is also a big part of the game, and I knew that, so I’ve worked on that quite a lot. I’ve been getting used to all the players, to the style of football, and now, I feel very comfortable in the team, so that’s good.”
Reflecting on his partnership with Odegaard and Rice, Havertz emphasized their youthfulness and the ongoing process of understanding each other’s playing styles. He expressed optimism about the potential future ahead for the trio, stating, “We are all young, I think we are a similar age group. It’s amazing to play with them. They’re both top players, and we are still getting used to each other. It is only five months that we’ve known each other. Hopefully, there’s a big future ahead of us as well.”

Despite facing criticism for his goal and assist output this season, Havertz urged critics to recognize the broader contributions he makes to the game. He emphasized the importance of creating space for teammates and highlighted his commitment to scoring goals and providing assists. Havertz concluded, “I want to score goals, I want to assist, and that’s the nicest thing you can do, so I just try my best every game for that.”
