Georginio Wijnaldum, a former midfielder, was the first to divulge something, telling The Athletic in August 2019: “He conducted the meeting with his shirt tucked into his CR7 boxers, which we could see he was wearing.
“The entire changing room was rolling around on the floor in fits of laughter. That did a lot to break the ice. In certain circumstances, most people are serious and focused. But he cracked this joke while feeling at ease.
“He’s done hundreds of jokes like that,” a player said. “If you see that your manager is really confident and relaxed, it will have an effect on players. He is a father figure in those things for the players. With his jokes and his body language, he relieves players of pressure.”
