After Gomez’s noteworthy performance in Liverpool’s 1-1 draw with Manchester City, Klopp directed a message to Southgate regarding Gomez’s international future, expressing his surprise with a rhetorical “Joe Gomez…Gareth, honestly?”

Southgate had initially introduced Gomez to the England Under-21 team in September 2015 before promoting him to the senior squad in November 2017. Despite setbacks, including an ankle injury before the 2018 World Cup and a subsequent knee injury in November 2020, Gomez has not featured in an international match since his return to the squad.
