Javier Tebas Requests Joan Laporta’s Resignation as President of Barcelona Due to Referee Payment scandal – Report

After the most recent financial scandal to rock the Catalan club, Joan Laporta’s tenure as president of Barcelona may be coming to an abrupt end.


The five-time Champions League champions are accused of giving more than €1.5 million to a business that belonged to the former vice-president of referees in Spain between 2016 and 2018.

Goal reports that La Liga president Javier Tebas has now that Laporta resign as president of Barcelona if he cannot account for the 33 payments the club made to Jose Mara Enrquez Negreira.

Sevilla and other Spanish clubs have demanded that Barcelona be looked into, but La Liga is unable to do so legally due to Spanish football regulations.

Barcelona starts an internal inquiry

While other La Liga teams have requested a probe into the club, Barcelona has declared that an internal investigation into the Negreira situation has begun, according to AS Sport.

The compliance department has recruited a law firm to begin an investigation, the club’s vice president Rafael Yuste stated on Barca TV.

Although those who are found guilty are anticipated to face sanctions, the club also promises transparency throughout the investigations.

Barcelona might be barred from Europe.

According to an earlier report from Sports Brief, Barcelona is charged with paying Dansil 95, the business owned by Enriquez Negreira, almost €1.4 million. While Negreira served as the Vice-President of the La Liga Referees Committee, the payments were made over a three-year period.

If Barcelona is discovered to have bought referee favors during games, the body that oversees European football has the authority to bar them from participating in European tournaments.
