James Scott Bumgarner, who was born on April 7, 1928, and died on July 19, 2014, was an American actor. In 1928, in Denver, Oklahoma, James Scott Bumgarner became the father of Garner (now under Lake Thunderbird near Norman). German Americans Weldon Warren Bumgarner and Mildred Scott (Meek), who passed away five years after he was born, were his parents. His mother had Cherokee ancestry. His elder brothers were Charles Bumgarner, a school administrator, and actor Jack Garner. His parents were Methodists. Garner and his siblings were transferred to live with relatives when their mother passed away. When Weldon remarried in 1934, Garner was joined with his family once more.

Garner’s father left Norman and his siblings behind when his marriage to Wilma ended, moving to Los Angeles. At the age of 16, close to the conclusion of World War II, Garner joined the United States Merchant Marine after working at a number of professions he despised. He enjoyed his job and his fellow crew members, but he was often seasick. He joined the US Merchant Marine at the age of 16. He won several medals. In 1957, he made his television debut with the Conflict TV series. In 1959, he portrayed Bret Maverick in the film Maverick. He never had to check behind him again after this. He climbed the success ladder and came to the summit.

Throughout his television career, Garner was nominated for 15 Emmy Awards; he won the prize in 1977 for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series (The Rockford Files) and in 1987 for his work as executive producer of Promise.

Garner got a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his services to the cinema and television industries (at 6927 Hollywood Boulevard).
