Joanne Rowling was born on July 31, 1965, in Yate, Gloucestershire, at Cottage Hospital. Her parents, Anne (née Volant) and Peter (“Pete”) James Rowling, had traveled together by train the year before to their respective naval stations in Arbroath, Scotland. Pete was in the Royal Navy, while Anne was with the Wrens. They both hailed from middle-class families; Pete’s father set machine tools before opening a grocery store. They got married on March 14, 1965, when they were both 19. They abandoned the navy life and looked for a rural place to raise the child they were expecting. Pete began working as an assembly-line worker at the Bristol Siddeley factory after the Rowlings moved to Yate.

Midway through 1992, they were preparing to travel to London to meet Rowling’s family when she miscarried. Despite having a rocky relationship, they got married on October 16, 1992. Rowling started attending Wyedean School and College, a public school, when she was eleven years old. The director of science at Wyedean, John Nettleship, called Anne “extremely outstanding, a fascinating character, very inventive.” Rowling had always aspired to be a writer, but for pragmatic reasons she decided to study French and the classics at the University of Exeter, pushed by her parents who believed that having evidence of bilingualism would improve her chances of finding employment. According to her biographers, she was a typical Exeter student who prioritized her social life over her schoolwork and lacked desire and excitement.
