Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou has taken full responsibility for his side’s disappointing 2-1 loss to newly-promoted Ipswich Town, acknowledging that his team’s poor performance falls on him.

The defeat, Spurs’ fifth of the Premier League season, saw them fail to impress in a match they had hoped to win. Despite a late goal from Rodrigo Bentancur, which denied Ipswich goalkeeper Arijanet Muric a clean sheet, first-half strikes from Liam Delap and Sammie Szmodics were enough to secure the victory for the visitors.

Postecoglou didn’t shy away from the blame, admitting that the responsibility for the team’s struggles lies with him.

“It’s just down to me,” Postecoglou said in his post-match interview with BBC Sport. “I’m not getting consistent performances from the players. It’s something I need to address. I’m the person in charge, so that’s usually the way it goes. I take responsibility.”

He added: “We can’t give ourselves those kinds of mountains to climb.”

Speaking further on Tottenham’s Review Show, Postecoglou expressed his dissatisfaction with the team’s performance: “It was hugely disappointing and, from my perspective, unacceptable. We started the game nowhere near the levels we needed to be and gave ourselves a mountain to climb.”

He continued: “In the second half, we had the ascendancy and enough opportunities to get the job done, but we didn’t do enough with it. We were far too passive without the ball, allowed them to feel comfortable, and that’s what we don’t want to do when we’re at home, especially. We paid the price for that.”

Tottenham will return to action after the international break on November 23, when they face reigning Premier League champions Manchester City.
