According to one journalist, it would be an “utter joke” if Manchester United decided to sack Erik ten Hag after considering his recommendations for two new signings.

The Red Devils remain undecided on Ten Hag’s future following a season where he guided United to an eighth-place finish in the Premier League and an early exit from European competitions before Christmas. However, Ten Hag’s position gained unexpected support from the club hierarchy after United won the FA Cup by defeating arch-rivals Manchester City.

The lack of a standout candidate to replace Ten Hag could also play in his favor. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano insists that Manchester United are “waiting for the season review to be completed” before making a final decision on Ten Hag’s future.

Romano explained in his Caught Offside column: “Manchester United are still completing their season review. Currently, there are mixed feelings, and previous reports indicated that United had spoken with agents of other managers, suggesting a possible parting with Ten Hag. However, no formal decision has been made yet. Once the review is completed, Ten Hag will be informed of their decision.”

Romano also mentioned that several candidates are being considered to replace Ten Hag if he is dismissed, with Thomas Tuchel expressing a strong interest in returning to the Premier League and taking the United job despite the lack of Champions League football next season.

TalkSPORT journalist Anil Kandola added that new Man Utd co-owners INEOS are “listening to Ten Hag’s recommendations” for signings, including Crystal Palace winger Michael Olise and Bayer Leverkusen right-back Jeremie Frimpong.

Kandola wrote on X: “I’m told INEOS are listening to Ten Hag’s recommendations regarding incomings (Olise, Frimpong, etc.) and outgoings. It would be an utter joke if they decide to sack him but still follow his plans. If INEOS missteps here, it could lead to another decade of difficulties.”
