Former Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger has singled out the club’s ex-player Ashley Cole as the greatest left-back in Premier League history. Wenger, who coached Cole during their time together at Arsenal, described the former England international as a “fighter.”
Wenger’s praise for Cole came as the former Chelsea star was inducted into the Premier League Hall of Fame as its 22nd member on Monday.
Reflecting on Cole’s impact, Wenger stated via the Premier League’s official website: “It’s always challenging to rank players, but he is undoubtedly the best. I was fortunate to have outstanding left-backs when I arrived, with Nigel Winterburn being exceptional.”

He continued, “It’s interesting because our left-backs were consistently of smaller stature. Winterburn, Sylvinho, Ashley Cole, Gael Clichy, who succeeded Ashley Cole. Despite their similar sizes, they were all prominent figures, demonstrating that size at the back isn’t crucial, particularly on the flanks.”
Speaking about Cole’s character, Wenger emphasized, “He’s a fighter. Ashley’s character and self-assurance are among his standout qualities.”
Cole made a notable move from Arsenal to Premier League rivals Chelsea in 2006.
