Locals disclosed that because of the council’s security measures, traders always travel in convoys.
It was also discovered that just before Yantumaki, the traders’ convoy of cars ran into the bandits.
The residents also stated that the bandits opened fire on the vehicles after emerging unexpectedly from a jungle.
Speaking on anonymity, a resident stated, “It was early in the morning and the traders were closed.”
The robbers emerged from a woodland and took over the highway early in the morning as the traders were near Yantumaki.
All the bandits were doing was firing at the group of cars. Six traders had already lost their lives when law enforcement and military personnel arrived on the area.
“We don’t yet know if any of the traders were kidnapped by the bandits.”
When reached, ASP Abubakar Aliyu, the spokesperson for the Katsina State Police Command, confirmed the occurrence while stating that he had not yet received any specifics.
“You can call me back later for details. The incident occurred, but I don’t have details yet,” he stated.
The state is one of the impacted northern states, according to PUNCH Online, and has a history of attacks by gunmen and by citizens protesting.
In October 2023, five people lost their lives in the same Danmusa LGA, while at least twelve more sustained injuries. During the incident, five residents were also taken hostage.
A coordinated security force and the state governor, Dikko Radda, successfully stopped a terrorist attack on the Zakka settlement in Safana Local Government Area in December 2023.
