An IED went off in Mafa town, Mafa Local Government Area on Tuesday, killing two members of the Borno State Civilian Joint Task Force and wounding eight more.

On Wednesday, eyewitnesses in Maiduguri informed reporters that the incident occurred while the quasi-military personnel were conducting routine operations in the Mafa/Konduga LG axis when they ran over an IED that was allegedly planted by terrorists from Boko Haram.

According to a CJTF official in Maiduguri who spoke with The PUNCH, “it happened around 4pm when the CJTF members were out on their routine operation driving in their vehicle through a bush path between Mafa and Konduga.”

Eight of them suffered severe injuries and were taken right away to the hospital, while two of them passed away on the spot.

Goni Gonibe, the local government chairman, was cited in an earlier statement from Mafa LG’s information section as confirming the occurrence and calling it “a great loss to the fight against insecurity in the state.”

In accordance with Islamic customs, the two dead CJTF men were interred in Mafa town on Tuesday right away.

The statement said that Goni Gonibe, the LGA Chairman, Baba Ali Modu, the State House of Assembly member representing Mafa, Alhaji Sale Bukar, the LG Secretary, and a few high-ranking military personnel from the Operation Hadin Kai Theater Command attended the funeral.
