Ian Maatsen has inked a fresh two-year contract with Chelsea and finalized a six-month loan move to Borussia Dortmund. Originally set to expire in 2025, Maatsen’s existing contract had prompted Chelsea to explore offers, with the player turning down a £31.5m transfer to Burnley in the summer.
In a compromise, Maatsen committed to a new two-year deal, extending his association with Chelsea until 2026. However, the contract includes a release clause that will activate upon his return from Dortmund at the end of the current season.
Expressing his enthusiasm for the loan move, Maatsen stated, “Borussia Dortmund tried hard to get me. I’ve been following BVB and its fans for a long time and was even at the Champions League game in Manchester in 2022 to see the team live on the pitch. I’m very happy that the loan is now worked out. I promise that I will give everything for the team’s success, and I’m really looking forward to seeing the Yellow Wall.”

Despite impressing on loan with Burnley in the Championship last season, Maatsen opted against a return to Turf Moor this year, despite Chelsea accepting a loan offer with a £31.5m obligation to buy in 2024.
Following this decision, Maatsen faced challenges in securing playing time, as Chelsea dealt with long-term injuries to both Ben Chilwell and Marc Cucurella. Despite the void, Blues manager Mauricio Pochettino seldom turned to Maatsen. Levi Colwill has predominantly occupied the left-back position this season, with Malo Gusto occasionally switching flanks.
Although Maatsen made 15 appearances in the first half of the season, he accumulated just 378 minutes of playing time, mainly in advanced roles.
