Ian Maatsen has expressed his desire to stay with Borussia Dortmund permanently after his loan spell from Chelsea concludes this summer. The Dutch full-back moved to Dortmund on a six-month loan, devoid of an option for a permanent transfer, as the German club refused to meet Chelsea’s conditions for an obligatory purchase clause.
In order to facilitate the agreement, Maaten agreed to a new Chelsea contract until 2026, featuring a release clause of £35m set to become active in the summer. While Dortmund’s decision to trigger the clause remains uncertain, Maatsen has clearly stated his interest in extending his stay at Signal Iduna Park.
“I feel like I’ve been playing with these guys for many years,” Maatsen remarked. “I’m leaving all options open. I would like to come back. Why not? We’ll see what the future brings.”

Chelsea had previously activated an extension clause in Maatsen’s contract to prevent him from leaving on a free transfer. Despite receiving a £31.5m bid from Burnley in the summer, the Dutch player declined the move and struggled to secure a spot in Mauricio Pochettino’s first team, accumulating 199 minutes across 12 Premier League appearances before Dortmund expressed interest.
Maatsen has recently started in Dortmund’s last two Bundesliga matches, contributing his first assist in the 4-0 victory over Koln. Additionally, Chelsea is set to sell another left-back, Lewis Hall, to Newcastle United for £28m at the end of the season, contingent on the on-loan youngster meeting certain performance targets, which reports suggest are easily achievable.
