Jose Peseiro, aiming to guide the Nigeria Super Eagles to a fourth AFCON title in Cote d’Ivoire, has disclosed rejecting a contract extension despite leading Nigeria to the round of 16 at AFCON 2023.
In an interview with SportTV+ via record pt, coach Peseiro shed light on his decision. Despite a challenging start in the 34th AFCON, the Portuguese manager successfully steered Nigeria to the round of 16.
Reflecting on the journey so far, Peseiro, the former Porto manager, emphasized Nigeria’s commendable performance in a tough competition. He acknowledged the pre-tournament favorites but highlighted the unpredictability, atmospheric conditions, and the purity of the game that make the competition challenging.

Addressing rumors about his potential departure, Peseiro clarified that there has been misleading information circulating in Nigeria, emphasizing that he has not exposed the difficulties faced by the team.
Regarding his future as the head coach, Peseiro stated, “I have a contract until the end of the CAN. I’ve been offered a renewal, but I didn’t want to.” He expressed frustration with misinformation spread by the Nigerian press.
Peseiro is now fully focused on the AFCON 2023 round of 16, where the Super Eagles face a formidable challenge against arch-rivals, the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon over the weekend.
