The Nigerian international Paul Onuachu has explained why, despite interest from the Belgian Champions, he turned down an invitation to join Club Brugge.
During the recently closed transfer window, Onuachu was heavily linked with a move away from Genk, with Club Brugge among the teams interested in signing the Nigerian. However, Onuachu believes it would have been a bad decision for him.
Onuachu has been one of the top scorers in Belgium’s top division for the past two seasons, and he also leads the Jupiler League in goals scored.

The Super Eagles striker is expected to return to the Cegeka despite interest from Brugge, Atletico Madrid, Lyon, and Arsenal.
Onuachu acknowledged Brugge’s interest in an interview with the Belgian newspaper De Morgen, but insisted that trading Genk for the current Belgian champions would have been absurd.
“Club Brugge contacted me, so why should I leave Genk for Brugge?” I believe that would be a step backward, and you wouldn’t do that. Equally adamant about not wanting that was the board.
According to De Morgen, Onuachu told Voetbalkrant, “It makes sense to me that I did not go to a domestic competitor.”
Onuachu earned the Ebony Shoe, given to Belgium’s outstanding player of African or African heritage, as well as the top scorer and Belgian Professional Footballer of the Year accolades in 2021.
After scoring 33 goals to lead all African goal scorers in the 2020–21 season, he became the first Nigerian to win the title in 25 years.
