To join the elite of the Premier League, GRAEME SOUNESS has backed Rangers and Celtic in their plans to construct a sizable SHARED stadium.

The Ibrox veteran believes that sharing a single, enormous stadium in Glasgow’s city centre would be extremely advantageous for both clubs.

With their present Scottish TV deal and prize money, Souness acknowledges that the Old Firm duo will never be able to financially compete with the best teams in Europe.

In recent years, it has been predicted that Rangers and Celtic may go down to the English league to benefit from the enormous financial opportunities there.

Although it is improbable that anything would ever come of it, Souness is sure that a brand-new stadium with a capacity of 100,000 will provide the two teams with the much-needed financial boost.

He does envision the two clubs competing against the rest of England in the country’s top division.

And if they did join and shared the new enormous facility as well, he is confident that they would quickly rise to become Premier League top-half sides.

‘It has been a dismal Champions League campaign for the two Glasgow clubs, who have so far mustered just four goals and two points between them from ten games,’ he wrote in his Daily Mail column.

“Although it is a letdown for Scottish football, I frequently get asked why they are not competitive.

“Well, I reside in Bournemouth, where the team plays in the Premier League despite having an 11,000-seat stadium and a yearly TV revenue of more than £90 million.

“Despite having large stadiums that can hold more than 50,000 people, Celtic and Rangers only receive roughly £2 million or £3 million in TV revenue annually. So that’s your response.

“If they consented to jointly construct a stadium with a 100,000-capacity, they would quickly advance to the top-half of the Premier League. In an instant, I would bring them here.

Scottish football would continue to exist. It would only need to establish its own level.
