Top American hurdler Evonne Britton has officially changed her nationality to Ghana and is now poised to become Tobi Amusan’s primary competitor in Africa.
Britton, who previously represented the United States at the junior level and clinched a bronze medal in the 400m hurdles at the 2010 World Junior Championships (later upgraded to silver due to a disqualification), brings a wealth of experience to Ghana’s athletics scene.
Having excelled as a collegiate athlete at Penn State University, Britton encountered a setback in her second year due to meniscus surgery on her left knee following a hurdling mishap. Despite this, she concluded her college career as an eight-time qualifier for both outdoor and indoor NCAA championship meets.

In addition to her collegiate achievements, Britton showcased her talent at the 2016 US Olympic Trials, recording a personal best of 12.78 seconds in the 100m hurdles. Although she didn’t advance to the final, she continued to make strides in her career, securing a second-place finish in the 60m hurdles at the 2019 USA Indoor Track and Field Championships.
The 32-year-old athlete engaged with various Ghanaian sports authorities to facilitate her nationality switch and is now aiming to represent Ghana at the Paris Olympic Games.
Britton’s decision to don Ghanaian colors positions her as Amusan’s foremost rival on the continent. With impressive personal bests of 7.86 seconds in the 60m hurdles and 12.78 seconds in the 100m hurdles, Britton’s times are among the closest to those of the Nigerian world record holder for an African sprint hurdler.
