Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann has provided insight into his decision to play Arsenal’s Kai Havertz in the left-back position during a friendly against Turkey on Saturday night.
In the match, Havertz not only scored but also conceded a penalty while operating as a left-back. The game concluded with a 3-2 victory for Turkey, adding to Germany’s troubled preparations for hosting Euro 2024.
Nagelsmann, in his first home game as the new manager, faced scrutiny for deploying Havertz in an unusual position. The versatile attacking midfielder, who has played various roles in his career such as No.10, false-nine, striker, right-winger, and recently as a No.8 under Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, can now add left-back to his repertoire. Havertz shared the back four with his former Chelsea teammate Antonio Rudiger.

Speaking to RTL before the match, Nagelsmann said:
“Kai won’t always be in this position.
“I have a great idea, he is an exceptionally good footballer. This is a very good option. He won’t always play as a classic left-back.”
