Manchester United icon Gary Neville emphasizes that he is not assuming a role within the club, despite his appointment to a group tasked with evaluating a regeneration project centered around Old Trafford.

Last week, United confirmed the establishment of the ‘Old Trafford Regeneration Task Force’ aimed at exploring redevelopment possibilities for the stadium and its surrounding areas. Newly onboarded shareholder Sir Jim Ratcliffe has expressed a desire to create a venue on par with Wembley Stadium.

Heading the task force is Lord Sebastian Coe, former Chair of the organizing committee for the 2012 London Olympics. He will receive support from Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham and Neville.

Neville, who has been vocal in criticizing United’s ownership under the Glazer family since transitioning to punditry after his retirement in 2011, clarifies that he is not assuming a role at the club. Instead, his involvement stems from his ownership of Hotel Football, situated opposite Old Trafford.

“It’s evident that I won’t be taking on a role at Manchester United,” Neville stated. “I’ve been openly critical of the ownership over recent years and have not been approached for a position within the club.

“However, what deeply concerns me is the lack of development in the surrounding area. I own a hotel within the vicinity of Manchester United’s property, and every time I look across at the industrial landscape, I feel a sense of sadness.

“For the past 15 to 20 years, there has been minimal development around Old Trafford. As a football club, winning on the pitch is crucial, but equally important is creating an inspiring environment around the stadium that benefits the local community and the millions of visitors to Old Trafford each year.

“There are numerous opportunities for job creation, housing, commercial ventures, education, and healthcare facilities—a vision I’ve long referred to as the ‘world of Manchester United.’ I’m not suggesting that all these elements will be included in the master plan, but I was invited to contribute to a group focused on regenerating Old Trafford, an area I am deeply passionate about.

“Outside of football, property development has been a significant part of my life for over 25 years. I relish the opportunity to create meaningful spaces and amenities that enrich the lives of Manchester residents and visitors alike. I am honored to be involved and believe it’s an area where I can genuinely add value to the club. The coming months and years will undoubtedly involve extensive work and deliberations.”
