According to Mark Bullingham, the FA chief executive and a director at IFAB, the body responsible for determining the laws of the game, Premier League referees are not in favor of a rule change that could potentially allow fans to eavesdrop on conversations between match officials and VAR during live matches. Bullingham explained that this consideration was made in an effort to enhance transparency.
However, there exists a “divide” regarding this concept between the officials and individuals involved in marketing and commercial aspects.
Bullingham stated, “This is a topic that has been discussed in various IFAB meetings. Generally, there is a difference of opinion in the room, often divided between marketing and commercial stakeholders and the referees.”

He continued, “From a marketing and commercial standpoint, our perspective usually leans towards the value of transparency, and we aim to provide fans with the most immersive experience possible. I believe that we have taken a step in that direction by announcing referee decisions, which is a positive move. Fans in the stadium should not be kept in the dark compared to those watching on TV.”
Mark Bullingham’s remarks follow a significant communication mishap that led to Liverpool having a goal wrongly disallowed in their 2-1 loss to Tottenham last month.
