Four of the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) directors have been asked to retire.
This was revealed in a statement released on Wednesday by Sam Olumekun, the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Commission’s Information and Voter Education Committee.
The retirement was in line with the circular regarding the eight-year tenure norm for directors in the public service, according to the electoral body.

Nevertheless, the INEC commissioner withheld the directors’ names.
He stated that two of them worked as department heads at the Commission’s Abuja headquarters, and the other two were administrative secretaries in their respective states.
According to Olumekun, the instruction did not apply to members of the medical cadre.
According to the announcement, “The Commission has approved the implementation of a policy mandating all Directors with eight years or more of service to retire from the public sector, in accordance with Federal Government Circular HSCF/SPSO/268/T3/2/37 issued on July 27, 2023.”
In accordance with this direction, four Commissioner Directors will go on terminal leave. Two of them work at the National Headquarters as Heads of Departments, while the other two are assigned to our State offices as Administrative Secretaries.
It is noteworthy, although, that Clinical Officers within the medical cadre are not subject to this regulation, as stated in Circular MH. 7205/T/31, dated September 7, 2023. As the impacted Directors resign from their positions, the Commission sends its warmest wishes to them.
