Former Minister of Information, Frank Nweke Jr., has urged the Federal Government to take significant measures to reduce the cost of governance. In an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Nweke emphasized the need to cut expenses and even consider merging some ministries.
He expressed concern over decisions such as expanding the cabinet, which has increased to nearly 50 members. Nweke believed that given the current economic challenges, there should be a concerted effort to downsize the government and trim costs.
He also raised reservations about certain allocations in the supplementary budget, citing unnecessary expenditures that the country can do without at this time.

Nweke further questioned the proliferation of ministries, suggesting that some ministries could coexist or be merged for more efficiency.
When asked about the possibility of the creation of ministries as a form of compensation to political loyalists, Nweke acknowledged it as a possibility. However, he emphasized the importance of political will and the president’s sense of patriotism. He urged a consideration of what should take precedence: loyalty to supporters or to the broader Nigerian citizenry who voted for the administration.
