Graham Potter is under increasing pressure as Chelsea languishes in 10th place in the Premier League standings despite spending more than £600 million on acquisitions.

Days after the summer transfer window ended, Todd Boehly fired Thomas Tuchel and replaced him with Graham Potter, the former manager of Brighton. The 47-year-old was viewed as the ideal candidate to guide the team ahead, but Potter has had a difficult first half of the season with the Blues sitting 10th in the Premier League standings.
The west London team has only won two games in its previous 16 games overall and is now closer to the bottom four than the top four. Only 23 goals have been scored by Chelsea in 24 Premier League games, but the team is dealing with deeper issues.
Gary Cahill, a former Blues captain, made a remark about the team’s lack of leadership after the loss to Tottenham Hotspur. “I’m a big believer that ability takes you so far and personality takes you that extra yard,” Cahill said on Match of the Day.
“As a player, it is your responsibility to go out and perform. You need leaders, individuals who set high expectations for both training and play on the field.
Since joining the team from Paris Saint-Germain, Thiago Silva has been a significant figurehead. In the 2-0 loss to Spurs, the Brazilian defender hobbled off with a knee injury, which is a major setback for Potter and the team.
In terms of having players who can be leaders on the field, Chelsea may have an issue with the inflow of young players. Raheem Sterling has a plethora of knowledge from his time at Manchester City and Liverpool, but injuries have hindered him in his first season at Chelsea.
Together with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Kalidou Koulibaly was brought in as a player with experience, although players like Wesley Fofana, Marc Cucurella, Mykhailo Mudryk, Noni Madueke, and company are all young and not considered to be leaders.
Young players can be leaders, but they will all need time to get used to their new surroundings and Potter’s expectations, so those who were already a part of the group must stand up and lead others to successful performances and outcomes.
Chelsea must exhibit courage and learn how to triumph inadvertently when things aren’t going their way. Something needs to change because the response to being down a goal in recent games against Spurs and Southampton wasn’t good enough.
