On Wednesday, the Kano police announced that they had detained five people on suspicion of causing a disturbance and inciting violence during the celebration of the Supreme Court’s ruling on the state’s governorship election.
The Supreme Court’s decision on Friday, which upheld Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf’s victory in the March 18, 2023, governorship election, was met with wild jubilation.
The All Progressives Congress candidate, Nasiru Gawuna, was proclaimed the victor of the elections by the Court of Appeal, which had dismissed the governor of Kano earlier.

The tension in the old city was caused by his sacking, but his supporters’ wild celebrations were relieved when his victory was restored.
Following a brazen altercation between ecstatic supporters of the governor and his party, the New Nigeria People’s Party, and supporters of the APC in the Gaya Local Government Area on Wednesday, five people were taken into custody, according to state Commissioner of Police Usaini Gumel.
“Since then, we have taken five suspects into custody,” Gumel stated, “and two victims are being treated at the General Hospital in Gaya.”
At the conclusion of the investigations, the police chief stated, the suspects would be charged and put on trial.
Political actors in the state were advised by Gumel to abstain from acts of violence or those that could incite violence. He claimed that in order to prevent a breakdown in law and order, the police had strengthened security at all designated hotspots throughout the state in cooperation with other security agencies.

“The entire weight of the law will be applied to any individual or group that tries to undermine law and order and disturb the tranquility,” he declared.
Gumel reassured the public that the police command was committed to giving them enough security and urged them to go out their lawful business.
