Obum Akunyili, the son of the late Prof. Dora Akunyili, former Director General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, expressed that his father, Chike, might have survived if immediate medical help was administered at the scene of the attack. He further stated that instead of rushing his late father, the driver, and security man to the hospital, people present were more focused on recording videos of the incident.
Obum shared these sentiments while giving his account of the tragic event involving his late father at the second public hearing of the Anambra State Truth, Justice and Peace Commission in Awka. This commission, established by Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, aims to investigate the violent agitations and unrest in the state and the South East.
He also commended the Commission for instilling hope and confidence in the citizens. Chike Akunyili lost his life to unidentified gunmen on September 29, 2021, while returning from an event in Onitsha, Anambra State, where his late wife had received a posthumous award. Tragically, both Chike and his driver succumbed to their injuries due to a lack of immediate medical attention.
