In a recent interview with Brut, Davido, a well-known Nigerian singer, proudly acknowledged himself and his colleague, Wizkid, as the trailblazers who paved the way for the worldwide success of Afrobeats music.

This statement sparked significant controversy among music enthusiasts both in Nigeria and abroad.

Davido asserted that he and Wizkid were the original artists who laid the groundwork for the global recognition and popularity of Afrobeat music, predating what he referred to as the influx of “new cats” into the genre.

He pointed out that Grammy-winning artist Burna Boy and other emerging talents like Rema, Fireboy, Asake, and Mayorkun are beneficiaries of the foundation that he and Wizkid had established earlier.

He, however, noted that he is happy that the future of Afrobeat music is in safe hands, owing to the quality music being churned out by the ‘new cats’.

“Everybody knows that I was one of the first, me and Wizkid to blow up. It feels good also seeing that the news cats coming up; like Burna Boy, Rema, Fireboy, Rema, Asake, and Mayorkun,” he said.
