Saturday’s Merseyside derby between Everton and Liverpool was postponed due to severe weather conditions that compromised the safety of supporters and players traveling to Goodison Park.
The highly anticipated match, which was set to kick off the Premier League weekend, was called off after Storm Darragh caused significant disruption across the region. On Friday evening, local police issued warnings advising against non-essential travel, casting doubt on the fixture’s ability to proceed.
Everton released a statement on Saturday morning explaining the decision. They stated that a safety advisory group meeting, attended by officials from both clubs, Merseyside Police, and Liverpool City Council, determined the match should be postponed due to strong wind gusts and an ongoing amber severe wind warning lasting until Sunday morning.

The club’s statement read: “We apologise for the inconvenience caused and thank supporters for their understanding. While we know this is disappointing, the safety of fans, staff, and players is our top priority. Information on a rescheduled date will be provided in due course. All tickets for the original fixture will remain valid for the rearranged match.”
This Merseyside derby was expected to be the last one at Goodison Park for Liverpool, as Everton plans to leave their current stadium at the end of the 2024/25 season. Everton had won the last home derby 2-0 in April and would have hoped to further dent Liverpool’s title aspirations in this December clash.
