Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag suggests that Antony’s struggles at the club this season can be attributed to off-field issues. Antony, who arrived from Ajax for £82 million in 2022, featured in the first four Premier League games this year before facing allegations of domestic violence. Investigations were initiated in both Brazil and England.
United granted Antony leave to address the situation, and upon his return three games later, he has faced a challenging run of form, still awaiting his first goal or assist this season after 21 appearances across all competitions.
Facing criticism from fans and rivals, Antony received support from Ten Hag, who explained in a press conference that the off-field issues have affected the player.

“I can explain, I think it’s very simple,” Ten Hag began. “His off-field issues stop him playing. The first year was OK, the pre-season was very OK, the first four games [this season] were very good. I’ve seen the game against Spurs back, and he played a very good game.”
However, Ten Hag acknowledged that Antony’s performances have not met expectations since his return. Quizzed on Antony’s past performances under Ten Hag at Ajax, the manager stressed the need for improvement.
“You mention Ajax, I look back there; his effectiveness, end product was higher, and also in the Champions League…very high,” he continued. “He’s capable of doing this – key actions, key passes, the crosses, the finishing – it’s very high, and he should return to that level, but the Premier League is more difficult. He’s capable of doing that.”
Ten Hag highlighted the impact of off-field issues on Antony, stating that they have affected him and emphasizing the player’s responsibility to address and overcome them.
