Bayer Leverkusen head coach Xabi Alonso has revealed he turned down the opportunity to replace Jürgen Klopp at Liverpool because he was focused on winning the league with his current club.

Alonso was one of the names linked to the Liverpool job in March after Klopp announced he would be leaving Anfield. However, the former Liverpool midfielder chose to stay with Bundesliga champions Leverkusen for at least one more season.

“I saw the links to replace Klopp, but at that time, I was focused on winning the league,” Alonso explained ahead of his return to Anfield for their upcoming Champions League match. “We were solely focused on that, and I didn’t engage in any negotiations with other clubs.”
