Sporting Lisbon has confirmed that Manchester United has expressed interest in triggering the €10 million release clause in manager Rúben Amorim’s contract.

The Portuguese club has notified the country’s financial regulator about the ongoing negotiations. Amorim is set to lead Sporting in their Taca da Liga match against Nacional at Estádio José Alvalade on Tuesday night, but it may be his final game in charge.

As a publicly traded company, Sporting is required to inform Portugal’s financial regulator, the CMVM, of any developments that could significantly affect the club’s business.

In their statement to the CMVM, Sporting said:

“Sporting informs the market, in compliance with the information obligation under Article 17 of Regulation (EU) No. 596/2014, that: 1. Manchester United FC has shown interest in hiring coach Rúben Amorim, and the Board of Directors of Sporting SAD has referred to the terms and conditions stipulated in the current employment contract, specifically the termination clause amounting to €10,000,000.00;

  1. Manchester United FC has expressed interest in paying Sporting SAD the amount of this clause.”
