Chelsea’s crowded attacking lineup has made it challenging for Joao Félix, as he competes for playing time with the likes of Cole Palmer, Nicolas Jackson, and Noni Madueke.

Ahead of Chelsea’s Conference League clash with Armenian side Noah, Enzo Maresca admitted feeling “shame” over Félix’s limited opportunities. “I feel shame about Joao,” Maresca said to reporters. “I would like to give him more minutes in the Premier League, but I’ve said many times, we need defensive balance. We can’t play with Joao, Cole [Palmer], and Christo [Nkunku] all at once.”

Maresca explained that while he would love to field all of his attacking options, achieving a balance between offensive and defensive responsibilities is crucial. “This is the only reason why [he isn’t playing more]. There’s no doubt that if Joao keeps working well, he will get his moment in the Premier League.”

He also spoke about Chelsea’s approach to team selection across different competitions. With a deep squad, Maresca clarified that players involved in the Premier League are not necessarily excluded from the Conference League and vice versa. “The season is long, and we have so many games. I understand from the outside, it may look like we have two squads, but we are just one team with 24 or 25 players, all fit and ready to fight for their place.”

Chelsea will look to extend their Conference League dominance when they host Noah at Stamford Bridge on Thursday evening.
