Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has confirmed that captain Reece James is back on the sidelines after suffering another hamstring injury earlier this week.

James, who was limited to just 11 appearances across all competitions last season due to injuries, missed the start of Maresca’s debut campaign with a hamstring problem. However, he had managed three starts and one substitute appearance before the international break.

Unfortunately, his return has been cut short by another hamstring issue, which Maresca hopes is only minor. “We have just one injured player, and that is Reece,” Maresca said ahead of Saturday’s match against Leicester City. “Unfortunately, he felt something small, and we don’t want to take any risks for the weekend. It’s a muscular problem, and hopefully, it’s not something long-term.”

Maresca confirmed the injury occurred just two days ago, stating, “He felt something, and he has to be out, for sure, this weekend. We don’t know for how long. If every time he gets an injury, it becomes harder for him mentally, that’s even worse. He has to accept that, but he also has to try to avoid it as much as possible, although sometimes these things happen.”

On a positive note, Maresca revealed that players like Jadon Sancho, Wesley Fofana, and Romeo Lavia have made progress in recovering from their own injuries. “Some are better, some are still doubts,” Maresca added. “We need to wait because Thursday will be the first session with all the international players.”
