England’s performances in Euro 2024 have faced heavy criticism, particularly regarding head coach Gareth Southgate’s tactics and squad selection. After a disappointing 1-1 draw with Denmark, questions were raised about Southgate’s decision to include Shaw, who has been sidelined since February due to injury. However, Shaw’s reintroduction for England’s third Euro 2024 match seems to be proceeding according to plan following his return to training on Monday.

Concerns about Shaw’s fitness persisted after he trained alone following the Denmark match, but he is now in contention to make his comeback.
In Shaw’s absence, Kieran Trippier has filled in at left-back for England, despite being naturally right-footed and struggling to provide width in attack. Trippier also nursed a calf injury sustained in the Denmark match but joined Shaw in full training on Monday.
Shaw is the sole left-footed defender in Southgate’s final 26-player squad, as Jarrad Branthwaite, another left-footer, was omitted from the provisional list. Ben Chilwell, who has 21 England caps, was not included after a challenging season with Chelsea.
England’s alternatives at left-back include Joe Gomez and Ezri Konsa, both of whom are natural right-footed centre-backs.
Shaw’s most recent competitive appearance was for Manchester United in February, playing the first half of their 2-1 victory against Luton Town before sustaining a muscle injury recurrence that led to his substitution.
