In the final match of the 2023 Girls’ U-17 African Nations Volleyball championship, Egypt’s U-17 female volleyball team emerged victorious over the host nation, Nigeria, with a 3-1 triumph. The competition unfolded on Thursday at the Moshood Abiola Stadium in Abuja.
Demonstrating their dominance throughout the championship, Egypt claimed the opening set with a score of 25-21. Nigeria responded by winning the second set at 25-20. However, Egypt rallied back, securing the third set 25-22 and ultimately sealing the championship with a 25-21 victory in the fourth set.
Notably, this new division was introduced to the continental tournament by the Conference of African Volleyball (CAVB).

Following the intense match, Nigeria’s team coach, Sunday Akapson, expressed disappointment at his team’s loss in the final but emphasized their commendable performance. He acknowledged the girls’ resilience in securing a spot for the World Cup next year, considering it was their first international championship.
“These young girls fought hard, securing a ticket for the World Cup next year in their first international championship. It’s a significant development for grassroots volleyball in Nigeria. We’ll continue working on these girls to prepare them for future encounters,” said Coach Akapson, expressing pride in the team’s achievements.
