Roma has appointed Daniele De Rossi as their new coach, despite his limited coaching experience, following the dismissal of Jose Mourinho, as announced by the Serie A club on Tuesday.
The 40-year-old former Italy midfielder, who spent the majority of his playing career at his hometown club, returns to Roma where he enjoyed a distinguished playing career. Roma officially confirmed the appointment, stating, “AS Roma are pleased to confirm that Daniele De Rossi has been appointed as head coach until 30 June 2024.”
De Rossi takes charge at Roma shortly after Mourinho’s abrupt sacking, which was revealed on Tuesday morning, marking the end of a disappointing third season for the Portuguese manager in the Italian capital.

While De Rossi achieved World Cup success with Italy in 2006, his trophy collection during his nearly two decades as a Roma player was more modest, including two Italian Cups and the 2007 Italian Super Cup. After concluding his playing career with Boca Juniors in early 2020, he transitioned into coaching.
Despite having limited coaching experience, with only a four-month stint at SPAL last season that ended with relegation to Serie C, De Rossi now assumes the role of head coach at Roma. The team currently sits in ninth place in Serie A, five points behind the Champions League positions, following a 3-1 defeat to AC Milan on Sunday.
