Chelsea midfielder Cole Palmer has begun the process of trademarking his iconic celebration, “Cold Palmer,” along with the nickname that has become closely associated with it.
The celebration, where Palmer rubs his arm to simulate feeling cold, has become a signature move, regularly seen during his goal celebrations for Chelsea and England. However, while the trademark would protect its use in commercial contexts such as branding and merchandise, it won’t stop players from imitating the gesture on the pitch.
Intellectual property lawyer Ben Milloy explained the process, calling it a “non-traditional trademark.” Speaking to Hawksbee & Jacobs on talkSPORT, Milloy said:
“Instead of filing a name or logo, he has sought to protect a gesture or technical emotion mark.

“It covers typical merchandise but also includes unexpected items like baking powder and underwater vehicles, hinting at what Cole Palmer might have planned.”
Interestingly, Palmer credits the celebration’s origin to Morgan Rogers, an Aston Villa player and former Manchester City academy teammate. Palmer adopted the move after seeing Rogers perform it and has since made it his own.
