Chelsea are reportedly closing in on an agreement to sign Villarreal goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen. The Blues are seeking a ball-playing goalkeeper for Enzo Maresca’s new system, with doubts lingering over Djordje Petrovic’s suitability.
Robert Sanchez has been reinstated as Chelsea’s first-choice goalkeeper, but Jorgensen emerged as a prime target for Maresca earlier this week, and negotiations have progressed positively. According to The Athletic, Chelsea and Villarreal are discussing a transfer fee ranging from ยฃ17m to ยฃ21m for the 22-year-old, who impressed as one of La Liga’s top ball-playing goalkeepers last season.
Chelsea appears undeterred by the price range and is ahead of Marseille in the pursuit of Jorgensen, per reports. Despite ongoing talks for a new goalkeeper, Sanchez started Chelsea’s first pre-season friendly. Maresca, while praising Sanchez’s performance, did not dismiss the possibility of signing a replacement.

“After tonight, Robert did very well and has been performing excellently since we started,” Maresca said after a 2-2 draw with Wrexham. “The goalkeeper is crucial to our style of play, one of the key positions. I won’t comment on players who are not Chelsea’s, but I’m very satisfied with Robert. We’ll see what happens. Currently, we have four goalkeepers. Petrovic remains with us but is injured. We’ll assess the situation. During the transfer window, anything can happen.”
Petrovic is expected to be available for transfer this summer, with the nature (permanent or loan) of his departure from Chelsea yet to be determined.
