While Middlesbrough initially controlled the game, Chelsea came close to an early lead as Thiago Silva’s long ball set up Ben Chilwell’s run, but his header looped over the bar.
Chelsea broke the deadlock on 15 minutes, as Chilwell’s run and Raheem Sterling’s assist allowed Armando Broja to tap in, despite a fumbled first touch and a touch from Jonny Howson.
Chelsea’s second goal arrived just before the half-hour mark, with Axel Disasi’s cross finding Enzo Fernandez to slot home after Broja’s miscued shot.
The third goal followed as Disasi capitalized on a sloppy pass from Matt Clarke, converting from a low Sterling cross.
Chelsea added a fourth before halftime when Cole Palmer intercepted Hayden Hackney’s loose pass and calmly slotted the ball into the bottom corner.
Levi Colwill came close to a fifth after the break, narrowly missing the post with a fierce effort.
Chelsea’s fifth goal came from Palmer, who steered in a low cutback from Conor Gallagher after Middlesbrough turned the ball over in their own half.
Substitute Noni Madueke joined the scoring, cutting inside from the right and curling a shot beyond Thomas Glover.
Middlesbrough thought they had a goal from Matt Crooks, but he was judged offside when meeting Hayden Hackney’s ball over the top.
In the closing moments, Morgan Rogers secured a consolation goal for Middlesbrough, but the night ultimately belonged to Chelsea, marked by the resounding sound of Madness’ “One Step Beyond” at Stamford Bridge after three minutes of stoppage time.
