Manchester United’s captain, Bruno Fernandes, has commended Portuguese prodigy Joao Neves amid speculation linking him with a move to Old Trafford.

With manager Erik ten Hag seeking reinforcement in midfield, the Red Devils are anticipated to be active in the transfer market this summer. The midfield area has been a concern for Ten Hag, particularly with the potential departures of current options such as Casemiro and Christian Eriksen.

Benfica’s 19-year-old sensation, Neves, has emerged as a potential target for United, much to the satisfaction of Fernandes, who has previously shared the pitch with him for the Portugal national team. Their partnership could be reignited in the upcoming March internationals.

Speaking to Sport TV, Fernandes lauded Neves, stating, “I don’t know if the United rumors are true, but I know he is ready for that big jump. He is an excellent player, he’s with the national team, that’s also why the big clubs are after him.”

Neves made his breakthrough into Benfica’s senior squad midway through last season, contributing to their 2022/23 Primeira Liga triumph. His performances earned him a call-up to the senior Portugal setup, and he is expected to feature in their squad for Euro 2024.

As United seeks to bolster their midfield options, Neves could emerge as an ideal candidate to complement young standout Kobbie Mainoo, who has impressed at club level but was surprisingly omitted from Gareth Southgate’s England squad this month.

Capable in both attacking and defensive roles, Neves could seamlessly fit into a midfield pivot alongside Mainoo.

United’s next fixture after the international break is scheduled for March 30th against Brentford.
