Ayodeji Balogun, better known by his stage name Wizkid, is a multi-award-winning singer from Nigeria. He has added another trophy to his collection.
The winner of the prize presented on Sunday night at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles was Wizkid’s “Essence,” which features Justin Bieber and Tems. DJ Khaled, Kendrick Lamar, Drake, Nicki Minaj, and Future were among the other nominees.
Wizkid was one of the artists with the second-highest number of nominations for the awards, behind fellow countryman Temilade Opaniyi, who was nominated in three categories, prior to the ceremony in the United States. He was nominated in two separate categories.

The ‘Essence’ crooner was nominated for the ‘Best male R&B/Pop Artist’ and ‘Best Collaboration’ categories. Whilst he lost the ‘Best Male R&B/Pop Artist’ award to American singer, ‘The Weekend’, The African most decorated artist does not fail to clinch the 2022 BET award for the ‘Best Collaboration’ category.
Wizkid’s ‘Essence’ which features American singer, Justin Beiber has been described as the ‘song of the summer’, as it has achieved an outstanding feat, reaching platinum status barely a month after it was certified gold in the US.
In July 2021, ”Essence” became the first Nigerian song to crack the highly coveted music chart, Billboard, and the third in Africa.
Another Nigerian who was recognized on the night is Temilade Opaniyi aka Terms. Tems beats fellow Nigerian artists like Fireboy to clinch the Best International Act.
Delivering an appreciation speech after she received the award, Tems said the award is a sign for as many young ladies looking up to God for something good. She seized the opportunity to encourage single ladies to never let go of their dreams.
According to Trends & Buzz, the BET Award is the first for the Lagos native female singer.
