Barcelona’s midfielder Gavi faces the possibility of sitting out the remainder of the 2023-2024 season after sustaining an anterior cruciate ligament rupture while playing for Spain during the November international break.
Gavi, visibly emotional as he left the field following a significant stumble while controlling the ball on Sunday, is set to undergo surgery to address the injury. Barcelona, in an announcement on November 20, stated that further details about the injury would be provided in the coming days, confirming the 19-year-old’s right ACL would undergo an operation.
Anticipating Gavi’s season-long absence, it means the midfielder will miss the chance to participate in the 2024 Paris Olympics and the 2024 European Championship. The recovery period, as estimated by Barcelona, is expected to be between eight to ten months, following the formal confirmation of the “complete tear of the ACL.”

Having accumulated 111 appearances for FC Barcelona since his senior debut in 2021, Gavi has contributed twelve assists and scored seven goals across all competitions. In his 27 appearances for Spain as a midfielder, he has notched five goals. Gavi played a pivotal role in helping Barcelona secure the Spanish Super Cup and league title in the previous season.
Spain’s manager, Luis de la Fuente, described Sunday’s 3-1 victory over Georgia in Valladolid as the “most bitter victory I have experienced in my life,” highlighting the somber note due to Gavi’s injury occurring just 26 minutes into the game.
