At the Ballon d’Or event on Monday, Robert Lewandowski won the honor for best goal scorer from the previous campaign, now known as the Gerd Mueller Trophy.

The 34-year-old scored 57 goals in 56 games for club and country last season after joining Barcelona from Bayern Munich in the offseason.

With 35 goals, he was the Bundesliga’s leading scorer.

Lewandowski also took home the honor the year it was originally given out, beating Mueller’s previous record for the most goals scored in a single Bundesliga season with 41.

But after almost losing out to Lionel Messi a year ago, he has yet to take home the actual Ballon d’Or.

In 2020, the Pole would have been a clear favorite to win, but the ceremony was controversially cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic’s impact on the football schedule.
